Cure for Impotency after Prostate Surgery Proposed

Men everywhere are always looking for a way to correct impotency and/or to improve their endowment. Just recently, a new cure for erectile dysfunction after prostate surgery has been proposed upon completion of current research.

The Research

A study conducted by Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine shows that a new protein called “sonic hedgehog” can correct ED. This is a new post-surgery development that is now being more advocated for men who have just had cancerous prostate removed.

This is a study that was most likely inspired by the fact that nearly 80% of prostate cancer patients lose the ability to have an erection. This is due to the damage of a critical nerve that runs all along the prostate gland.

According to current research, this damaged nerve can be regenerated more quickly. The current proposed way to do so would be with the use of “sonic hedgehog.” This protein was administered in tests via a nanofiber gel.

Note, however, that this study done was conducted on rats. Therefore, it may not have the same effect on humans. In any case, it is a start and it does show that the protein did regenerate the damaged nerve twice as fast on the rat as it would have been on its own.

This study conducted was probably also inspired by the fact that accelerated nerve healing is vital to erectile functioning. The objective is to help safe a man from permanent impotency by preventing cell death.

However, this research report does not only apply to prostate cancer surgery patients. Diabetic patients may also benefit, according to principle investigator and assistant Feinberg urology professor Carol Podlasek.

Further Info

It is said that not only does this “sonic hedgehog” protein help regenerate important erectile nerves, but also activates other bodily proteins. This all around helps promote better health to patients.

"There is a tremendous need for a therapy to treat erectile dysfunction caused by cavernous nerve damage," says Podlasek. She also is a member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.

For Men

If you are a man who needs help with impotency issues the first step is to get a regular checkup. This will ensure that you are healthy enough for sexual activity.

It will also ensure that you are able to be treated for this condition. It is then during which a variety of options will be open to you. However, the above information in this article does apply specifically to recent research reports on prostate nerve damage.
